[Update June 2023: Thanks go out to Pat Murkland of Banning’s Dorothy Ramon Learning Center for clarifying that these earth works are called the “Blythe Intaglios” and they are actually in the Colorado Desert, 150 miles from here. However, as Murkland points out, the narrator’s use of Banning as the regional landmark people would have heard of (in lieu of Palm Springs, for instance) says a lot about its historical role in the region. Franklin W. Dixon also places these earth works at the center of The Hardy Boys book Mystery of the Desert Giant.]
